#4 The Tasty Rock that Changed the World (Salt: A World History)

Nat's Notes

CHAPTER

The History of Salt in the Americas

In 1784 a Minnow of salt which was 49 kilograms cost only 31 Sioux in Brittany but 81 in Poto 591 in Anjou and 611 in Berry. So you've got a 20x price difference in salt in different areas of France, two of those areas are right next to each other. Something close to a state of permanent warfare developed between salt smugglers and the Gabaloo. They would be murdered and the crown would respond by having royal troops sack the village where the crime took place. The story of salt in the Americas is not over because during the Civil War salt becomes really important again.
