Introduction

The profession has a long history of being the butt of office jokes and much maligned in pop culture. The root of the conflict between employees and human resources is the belief that the function exists not as the name suggests to be a resource for the humans that work for the company, but rather to protect the company from the liabilities presented by the people who work there. HR roles have grown to include compliance, harassment and bias training, diversity, equity, and inclusion responsibilities and goals. Once seen as out of touch and inefficient, the industry is now in the middle of some of the biggest workplace issues.
