One in three immigrants from Ireland was female in the 1820s. From around 1845, this has increased to one in two migrants being female. Girls and women outnumber male migrants thereafter up until the 1920s. Irish girls and women were also unusual compared to other immigrants heading to America because they were regularly unmarried when they left.
