The pledge to the flag, like most new ideas, came from the outside. A socialist preacher decided about 100 years ago that the nation could use a pledge we could all begin with. Dwight D. Eisenhower was persuaded to add the words under God to the pledge because it was thought this would be a great way to fight communism.
