The Layering System for Winter Trekking Pants

In the summer, my primary pant strategy is a base layer and trekking pants. In the winter, my base layer is there for giving me insulation during the day but not at night or in extreme cold. For very cold conditions in the winter, I'm going to take a high loft, synthetic or down insulating pant with me as well. And again, I prefer a full-side zip pant so that I can put it on over my trekking pants without having to remove my snowshoes and skis and crampons.
