The Importance of Honor in the Renaissance
There was an increasing concept of the importance of honor as something that needed to be preserved at all costs. The rules of the duel were similar to those of trial by combat, but because theye was no legal rational for the duel, they tended to be more private affairs. A doctor would normally be requested to attend, and each duellist would choose a second a man who would take his place if he wasn't able to duel. That person was also responsible for things like carrying spare weapons and insuring that the fight was honourable and true. But another responsibility of the second, which is less well known, was to try to stop the duel from happening in the first place. See
