Is there an easy way to differentiate when it is something that is chosen for its masichistic and thus pleasurable purposes, verses when it provides more? I think we identify things on the extreme. So one answer to your question is, we seek suffering cause is part of what we see as a meaning for life. But it can also suggest that we don't just want pleasure. And i think suffering and pain can s of other motivations and appetites we have, including maybe transcendents meaning, purpose.
