The Unbelievable Impact of the River Reversal on Chicago
The city of Chicago was built on a very flat low lying swamp. Drainage was always a bit of an issue, not just rain water, but sewage as well. The entire central part of the city was raised so they could have fit a new above ground drainage system underneath it. That basically directed the water away from the city into waterways that then flew into Lake Michigan where the city gets its drinking water from. Now that was a problem because it caused disease amongst populations. So this is where the river reversal came in. They changed the direction of the river. So the waterways didn't flow into Lake Michigan, but flew back out towards the Mississippi River which is mind blowing. Like you imagine
