Family was much more important in the 18th century than it is today. The name Bonaparts may have carried some weight in the independent Corsican Republic, but they didn't have any status at all in the Kingdom of France. Carlo and Latizia had big dreams for their children's futures. They envisioned their daughters marrying up into families that produced such eminent men.
