Introduction
The mid-continental nail plant in Poplar Bluff, Missouri laid off more than 10% of its workforce last week. The company anticipates closing by Labor Day unless the government grants it an exemption from the tariff. In retaliation for tariffs on foreign goods coming into the US, the European Union has imposed tariffs on US goods going into Europe. Of course Europeans will buy fewer hogs and the resulting decline in sales will cost Harley-Davidson around $100 million annually.
