Maastachio de Feardenon oversaw the successful construction of the Mediterranean and Red Sea connecting Suez Canal. Between 1881 and 1889, Feardenon all managed little more than scratching the surface at a bankrupting expense of $287 million or $8 billion in 21st century dollars. In 1902, Congress opted instead to buy out the French company for 40 million dollars. The US government was already considering a canal through Nicaragua, but concerns over volcanoes killed that idea.
