Despite having a doctorate from a leading German university Sofia was still banned from attending lectures at Berlin University or any of the educational institutions in Prussia. When her five-year contract came through she ended up being paid a lot less than her male colleagues. Clearly Sofia's politics remained as radical as ever. She didn't hide them from her colleagues and this gave ammunition to conservatives at the university who opposed her professional progress.
