Aleo pathologists study diseases and injuries in long dead human and animal remains. Tim says that this patternt of unusual bony growth is different from what might be seen if the foot hd been lost as a result of something like an animal bite, say. The fact that any extra growth was seen on the leg bones at all shows that the person must have survived having their foot removed. Based on clinical comparison, a minimum of six to nine years of hailing has occurred.

A skeleton with an amputated foot discovered in Borneo has been dated to 31,000 years ago, suggesting that complex surgery might be much older than previously thought. The person whose foot was removed survived the procedure, which the researchers behind the find say shows the ‘surgeon’ must have had detailed knowledge of anatomy, and likely had access to antiseptic compounds.
