The serfs were emancipated in 1861. And what Tolstoy wanted to do was he wanted to give away his land. His family were outraged and they stopped him but he was most certainly pro liberation of the serfs. Martin Luther King jr and Gandhi were heavily influenced by Tolstoy's later writings.
