Humanity has basically taken a lot of carbon that was stable in the lithosphere and released it into the atmosphere by combustion, using it to create energy. There's a natural exchange of some 500 gigo tons of carbon between the biosphere, or the living egosystems of the planet, and the atmosphere every year. We need to lock up this carbon, this irrecoverable carbon, in a natural systems, as quickly as possible - or we're looking at a pretty serious disaster added to the climate crisis.
