The Spanish colonial empire and Catholic Church failed to eradicate these indigenous rituals surrounding sacred mushrooms and plants. A lot of these practices remained existent because they became more syncretic, disguising traditional practices or mixing with catholic imagery and symbolism. And so that's how some of these practices have survived.
