Pycystritus and the Dionysia
Pycystritus' political shrewdness in his active support of such a national festival that offered pageantry and entertainment to all Athenians, thus enhancing his popularity. Thespis is said to have been the first winner of tragedy competitions at the Dionysia in 534 BC. He was the founder of acting, by stepping out from a chorus and performing a solo. There will be more on these festivals in a future episode. But Dionysia, scenes of drinking and unrestrained merrymaking, were popular subjects of vase painting during Pycystritu's tyranny.
