Ptolemy and the Temples

After Alexander the Great entered Egypt and conquered it, he was succeeded by a dynasty of Macedonians named Ptolemy. They ruled Egypt as Egyptian pharaohs but governing in Greek culture. There was an uneasy alliance between them and the native Egyptian elites. As part of cultural bargaining they decided that the king would support the temples if the temples would support the king.
