The Influence of Tabatabahi on Islamic Philosophy

Tabatabahi died in 1981, only two years after the 1979 revolution which deposed the last of the Pahla vishas. He had earlier endorsed the notion that an outstanding individual may be recognized as head of the jurists. This idea was also used by Khomeini, the spiritual leader of the revolution. Tabatabahi inspired Cobain and Nasr to advance a new assessment of the philosophical tradition of Islam. They argued forcefully against the idea that this tradition ended with haveruis.
