Jeff gwynn was a member of Jim Jones' temple in redwood valley, California. He witnessed the death of his leader during an evening potluck meal. The church bought some guns which were given to a handful of men who would now tented jim's body full time. When he travelled in los angeles or san francisco they became heavily armed with pistols and shotguns. But as jim jones starts to slide down into the hole of paranoia, he needs his people to follow him down there. After the humiliation in indianapolis that failed healing show, he apparently felt like they needed a reminder of the seriousness of the struggle in which they were engagednd of the danger
