The Black Death and Women's Work
Wage records for the 14th century show that women were paid about 75% of the wages of men, which is roughly the wage gap today. That's fascinating because it speaks to exactly what you were talking about there with the idea that the work because it was done by women was less valuable. If you look hard at the data, I think there's a lot of continuity after the plague, which is itself very telling. And nevertheless, women's wages are pretty stable with the sorts of jobs women do are pretty stable.
