What Role Does Reading Play in Learning How to Write?

I was never taught how to write really. I just remember being like set writing tasks and then given feedback, which I didn't think was very helpful as a result of my English education. Do you think a good writer is only really created from being a good reader? It's certainly possible to be an avid reader and through that process of being exposed to all those kinds of uses of language and grammatical constructions of vocabulary. But it gives the foundations and the leg up that students that are currently coming off a lower base to then be able to express themselves on an equal playing field. What we really need to do is find the best evidence to back up your ideas in secondary school.
