The Persian fleet had crossed over from the Thracian coastline to the island of Thassos, resulting in the Thesians submitting to the Persians. But as they neared Mount Athos on the right leg of the peninsula, a violent storm drove them into the coastline and thus wrecked the Persian fleet. According to Herodotus, 300 ships and 20,000 men were lost at sea.
