The Pros and Cons of the Voting Rights Act
Ari Fleischer: The Voting Rights Act was an extraordinary piece of legislation, particularly the part that required states with a long history of discrimination to have to approve their voting changes. He says Congress knew they couldn't just say indefinitely that a place like Alabama would have to approve its voting changes with the federal government. Fleischer: It also meant that when the law came up for reauthorization, often it was an opportunity to expand it. In 1975, it was expanded to include language minority groups.
