Why Are So Many People Dying on America's Roads?

From September of last year, auto makers now must include automatic emergency braking systems in almost all new vehicles sold in the United States. This doesn't take into account any cars that went on the road prior to this date and was even then met with some spirited opposition from drivers. There's certainly a disproportionate amount of deaths on the road compared with other countries. The pandemic seems to have made things worse with more cases of impaired driving due to alcohol and drugs. But there are persistent factors which are cultural in nature. America's transport system is built for the road. Often venues are designed with only car transport in mind as a means to get there.
