The Importance of Social Movement Support for the BKK in Turkey

Francis O'Connor is currently a Mary Curie postdoc fellow in rural sociology at Wageningen University. His research focuses on the relationship between insurgent movements and their supporters. He looks at spatial dynamics of insurgent support in the cases of the BKK in Turkey and the M19 in Colombia. In his book, he explains how the Kurdish movement managed to maintain its political support even when it couldn't protect its supporters. The main argument was that the BKK was very careful not to push its supporters too far or respect its normative expectations.
