You Can't Divorce and Remarry Except for Spousal Infidelity

In their mind, spousal infidelity was already grounds for divorce and remarriage. So that reaction indicates that Jesus is giving a new teaching. Notice that Jesus distances his view of marriage from the prevailing views among first century Jews. The disciples reaction constitutes a second reason why we should not conclude that Jesus is referring to spousalinfidelity with this exception clause.
