Homo sapiens diverged from Australopithecines around six million years ago. But it's only about two to three million years later that we want to call them Homo. So what can we confidently say then about where in this evolutionary trajectory this little transition happened? It's a fascinating question. I think you can sort of zero in on part of it, but if you take this social cultural hypothesis seriously and look at the tools, it's really less than a million years.
