The Peloponnesian War - What Lessons Did Thucydides Wanted Us to Draw From?

The true lesson of the Peloponnesian War has to do with the need to avoid outrageous hubristic adventures by great powers. For Thucydides the tragedy was that Pericles more cautious narrow limited warfighting strategy wasn't pursued and Athens got very full of itself. The decision to try and really go for more at a time when restraint would have been the wisest course of action as the height of recklessness or imprudence so how do we think about these concepts of prudence and rationality in the context of leadership and political judgment? I'm curious if we can apply these lessons to the case of the Iraq war for the United States and in the case of Russia
