I think that the wild receptiveness among the public to Luther's critique of indulgences shows that yes, these people knew this was bullshit. Even when they're deeply held Christian convictions, they knew they were getting scammed. Knowing society is screwing you in some way, even if you're just waiting for someone to come along with the right way to describe it to you. Yeah. I mean, a lot of them could have seen indulgences more of like having to buy Girl Scout cookies from like the coworkers kid. Like, oh, I got to do this again. Yes. Fuck off.
