Episode CLXXXI - Crucifixion
Emperors of Rome

Evidence of Crucifixion?
We don't have much evidence of crucifixion at all archaeologically. And that's really not surprising. Part of the punishment, part of capital punishment, was what happened to the body afterwards. The idea of post mortem, bad treatment of the body, is very prominent in roman law. It's perfectly likely they just remained stuck up there on the cross until their bodies completely disintegrated and were picked apart by vultures. There is a little bit, though, and perhaps the best example of it comes from a discovery that was made in jerusalem some s ago which appears to show the actual process of crucifixion.
