The straightforward answer is for researchers and militaries to work closer together. We have to know actually what the operational elements are in order to develop robust methodologies, he says. The project that we're working on right now is calculating the carbon footprint of the US military's walling of Baghdad in the mid 2000s. So that's an indirect emissions image that you can only understand retrospectively.
