In the case of a blame or punish ment, if it's basically deserved, it's because you knowingly did wrong. There's nothing more basic than just that you knowingly didwrong. Contractiolist reasons are backward looking in a certain sense as we make agreements with each other about how we are to behave. The blame for knowingly doing wrong is more ultimately explained by the fact that a reasonable rational people would consent to this kind of treatment - not merely the person's knowing what they're doing.
