The Dissolution of the Monasteries
The dissolution of the monasteries is a watershed in English history, says historian. It's an extraordinary achievement by Cromwell primarily but also on Henry's part to be so destructive and to erase such a large part of English life with relatively little consequence. The big gap is what Cromwell was writing. His papers seem to have been destroyed when he fell from grace in 1540. We can only really sense what Cromwell is telling people by people responding to him. There's a whole range of stuff coming in. What goes out? You have to guess. But it's fascinating frustrating at the same time.
