The Influence of Witherspoon on the Life of William Wilberforce
John Newton was one of the most important influences in the life of William Wilberforce. Witherspoon likely practiced what he preached by giving him the opportunity to be fully emancipated which he appears to have been shortly after his death. In 1791 the College of New Jersey conferred an honorary degree upon Newton. The degree also suggests implicit support for Newton's role in opposing the slave trade.
