What Do These Two Case Studies Say About the US Empire Today?
Aaron Miller: There definitely are some interesting historical parallels here. The US had to be overtly supportive of decolonization while the deep state worked, you know, around the clock to undermine both of the countries we've talked about today in order to eventually place them under neo-colonial subjugation. In both countries, the US wanted to assassinate these nationalist leaders, a Nasser and Sukarno, with plausible deniability using Islamist fanatics because that's what was available to them.
