John Quincy Adams also used anti-Masonic rhetoric against Andrew Jackson during the 1828 election. The anti-Masons basically put their name on the map during this election even though they did not yet have a presidential candidate. They had established themselves as the first true third political party in the United States historically. On March 4th 1829 John Quincy Adams leaves the presidency and loses to dedicated Freemason and former general Andrew Jackson. Because Andrew Jackson was a Freemason this especially inflamed the already existing anti-Masonry movement.
