Shaving is a very enduring ritual that goes right back to Greek times. In Rome, only the wealthy could afford to go to barbers and being shaven showed you could afford it. After both World Wars, clean shavenness was next to godliness. The beard has waned in popularity but there are still endless permutations of facial hair.
