Before chemical fertilizer, these were very normal rotations. You didn't plow and plant a field every year. Well, I mean, if you did, you depleted it very, very quickly. So this historical rotation of a perennial in between the cropping was financially and practically imperative due to the farm having to grow its own horsepower.
