The History of the Deck Chair

The earliest designs of the named deck chair can be traced in print to the late 19th century. They are most obviously a forerunner to the sun-loucher, simple and elegant. The crew would write their name on paperboard and attach it to the seat. It became normal practice for passengers aboard ocean liners to reserve a spot. But primarily, it was enjoyed by the wealthiest in society, those who could afford the coveted first class ticket.
