Mixed Intensity Training
Mixed intensity training is what any collegiate cross country program would do right now. The blueprint that they have to go off of is the marathon program. When I started working with ultra marathon running, I did the exact same thing. There's a huge penalty for screwing it up in ultra running because you're exposed to so much suffering.
