The Importance of Context in English

The idea behind contrastivist account of the meaning of the word ought is that when I say stuff like Jill ought to be at home that is evaluated relative to a set of background assumptions about what the alternatives to her being home are. In English we have the rather than expression and somebody can actually totally consistently say John ought to take the bus rather than drive but he ought to bike rather than take the bus. This is a perfectly acceptable way of expressing yourself in English and it's a way which drives out explicitly the alternatives.
