Rutt's Problem With the Yi-Cing
Rutt's problem is that he has severed the shou Yi as the authentic text from all the commentaries that follow. He's precisely doing what you said we can't do, which is to see the Yi-Cing as something that exists as opposed to a process. In other words, Confucius probably saw more in it than the warlords who used it with their human sacrifices did at first. And this is an a historic way, or anti-historist way of looking at it.
