In November 2021, 35 women and their families escaped from Afghanistan over the border to Pakistan. Women footballers were deemed at risk from the Taliban for participating in a sport as un-Islamic so they were granted visas by the home office. Last week, there was a report stating that a number of the players were not top tier players had been claimed at the time. The BBC spoke to a number of former Afghan players, coaches and officials who identified 13 individuals who they believed were not members of the team's listed.
