How to Design a User-Friendly Interface

One of the suggestions here is to basically design, to start off with using standard solutions for things. Rather than create a fancy new interaction pattern or idea or phrasing, whatever, you go out there and look what everyone else does. And your first iteration is what everyone else doing. I'm thinking hamburger menu. Exactly.
