The roman world is much more typical with its approach to slavery than so the american south. One of the defining features of roman slavery in this historical respective stisnt is the absence of race as a factor. The constant traffic of slaves becoming free citizens leads to an interpenetration, blurring of the lines between slave and free. Thats, i think, quite distinct at least, is that surprises those of us who approach ancient slavery through the marble of the American south.
