If you look at the map of support for the Republican Party and where its core is, it maps almost exactly onto the Confederate States of the 1860s during the Civil War. And this speaks to the extraordinary nature of the transformation that you refer to. The Republican Party becomes the party not necessarily of white supremacy, but it becomes the party that allows those Americans who want to be white supremacists to be so. This is the southern strategy. But there are ways in which the North-South division is being complemented by other divisions more than with geography.
