The Year of the Houthis in Yemen
In February of 2012 Hadid sworn in for a two-year term as president after an election in which he stood unopposed. However, he is unable to counter the al-Qaeda attacks in the capital as the year goes on. By October 2014 the Houthis take control of most of Yemen's capital, Senna. The following month the rebels seized the Red Sea and the port of Houdaita. In January of 2015, after being placed under house arrest by the Houthis, Hadid resigns as president.
