A good litmus test of whether someone could be a good research engineer is whether they can properly implement a particular model from a paper in x hours, or some kind of quent. It takes more time and determination and patience than that. I emphasize that learning this stuff takes time - either to do it as a side project and give up all your other hobbies for a month, or to quit your job if you've got the runway for it. But yet, maybe that's like, a somewhat useful ball park.
