I think fundamentally that we have this compulsive view of the necessity of existence that our culture is distinctly lacking in gaiety. And I feel life is very much something of this nature. It is a play and it is its own end. That is not to say that their goal is the present when you think of the present simply as a hairline on a watch, the immediate instant. The present is that's only an abstract present. A person who hears a melody doesn't hear simply a sequence of notes. He hears the steps between the notes.
